Drinan on Target in Roma Defeat   02/11/2016

Cork City U19s performed superbly on Wednesday evening and can count themselves very unfortunate to be behind in the two-legged tie at the half-way point.

Following a lively opening in which City took the game to the Italians, Roma hit the front on 19 minutes.

City were not deterred by going behind and were soon level. Alec Byrne won a crunching tackle in the centre-circle and when Aaron Drinan was subsequently played in behind the Roma defence he showed real quality to fire a wonderful left-footed half-volley across the keeper into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

Aaron was denied from the penalty spot in the second half - his task hardly helped by the shouting and bickering of the Roma players.

City continued to push for a winner and outclassed their illustrious opponents. Ultimately they were outdone by two counter-attack goals which came very much against the run of play.

An excellent performance from City. Both Aaron and Alec were very impressive on the night - to the great pleasure of the many supporters from Ballea Park.

The return leg takes place in Rome in two weeks’ time.
